Day 13

In your own space, talk about setting yourself a fannish goal. Big or small, it doesn't matter. Some great examples include: complete a bingo, sign-up for a Big Bang, write that fic you've been thinking about for years, podfic that story that you love, make a fanmix for your fandom, post that bit of meta or reclist you keep postponing. Maybe resolve to be better at leaving feedback, or answering comments.

My Big Fannish Goal this year is finishing.

In 2012/2013 I wrote over 150,000 words - mostly novel-length stories - and finished only a handful of short ones. (1k-7k, mostly at yuletide.) I've never finished anything novel-length, and I'm craving the gratification of making that happen in my life.

So in that vein, I signed up for Get Your Words Out (http://getyourwordsout.livejournal.com/) with a goal of 200,000k, and wrote "write 200,000 words of fiction" on the office new year resolution board, and I want a goodly portion of that to be long-form finished work.

Over half of that is theoretically going to be in virtual season format, with a Universe Alteration for Sleepy Hollow Season 1 - what if Ichabod had wound up in purgatory and Katrina in the modern world?, which I'm Calling The AU inside my head. I'm hoping that the season finale doesn't kill my fannish love.

(This is partly in response to fandom, and partly because in my heart of hearts I love the ladies first and best.)

If the finale does kill my fannish love, I have some heretofore backburnered original projects ready to go, but I'm finger-crossing that I won't have to fall on them, because coming back into fandom feels like coming home. Which leads into my smaller goals:

* Interact with fandom more. Which I've been doing on tumblr - it's strange, since it's like a feed of everyone's comments on everyone's posts, but there's talking to people happening, and it's feeling less like shouting into a void now.

* Write every day. I started this up in October, fell off the wagon a bit, and am now back to doing, because it isn't just nice ... it's necessary, and I'm saner and more functional when I do write every day.

Day 12

In your own space, talk about what you think the future holds for fandom. What are your hopes and dreams for fandom? Do you have any predictions about what the next five years holds for fandom?

Long-form text communication seems to be going the way of the dinosaur, dunnit? Right now my ideal would be a resurgence in namespace journal-based fandom, that is where I'm most comfortable.

Five years go it was January 2009 - Star Trek hadn't come out yet, Kink Memes were just getting started, tumblr was a thing nobody could figure out how to use ... Dreamwidth wasn't a thing and SUP was That Thing That Kept Fucking Up On LJ. I was a perennial junior, living in Virginia, revisiting Tamora Pierce's Tortall with fic and conversation on the then-bright-shiny-new Fief Goldenlake.

Now: LJ is quiet and DW is nearly as much; I'm on tumblr as often as I'm here, and people are back to posting fanfiction on archives again. People on my flist are making zines, yuletide is still going strong, and a lot of us seem to have lost the energy we used to spend wanking - pardon - engaging people we disagree with in futile discussions that end only in hurt feelings backward progress.

I don't know what the future holds, or what fandom will look like in five years' time. Five years from now I may not even be here: five years from now I kinda hope to have acquired a house, a spouse, and a kid or two, although seeing how many of my friends have handled fandom presence with parenthood gives me hope.

One thing's for sure: fandom isn't going anywhere, and it'll probably look (not entirely but still discernably, largely) different from how it looks today.

Yuletide Friending Meme | My Thread

It's back to work today, assuming it hasn't been cancelled. Am checking the emails now to make sure.

I also have the "Praise the Lord" themesong stuck in my head, which was an earworm when I was five and is an earworm now.

Nope, work in on despite blizzard - I'm going to start out now and maybe try and leave early today.

AND it's [profile] fandom_snowflake time! this is PLEASING to my FACE and I'm going to try and do exciting things with it this next two weeks!
