Is it okay to harvest plot ideas/inspiration for stories from existing media?

How about in a fic exchange? I mean, on the one hand: everything has already been done at least once, but on the other ... fandom IME can be weirdly passionate about never using someone else's ideas ever. (Does it count if it's an idea from a commercial source? If it's so high-level that only people who'd seen the original would recognize the remake if the newer version doesn't hang a lampshade on it, like the salami-slicing plot in Office Space?)

Anyone? Bueller?

I don't see the problem. I know fandom is fucked up weird about that shit, but seriously. Unless you are lifting word for word, I have always thought that remixing is kid of the POINT of fandom.

Yeah, that's what I think as well--especially if there's some change in medium between the fandom being lifted and the fandom being written in, y'know?

I wonder whether there have been any recent wanks about lifting plots and things from other sources. Obviously there was Cassie Claire doing her paragraphs pulled word for word from existing media, but I don't recall anything similar happening in the last couple of years. (Oh paranoid-brain, the things you latch onto.)

(It occurs to me that it's pretty hypocritical of the fandom hivemind, isn't it? We're a subculture that exists based on creating work using other people's intellectual property, after all.)

Honestly, most of the wank like that gets leveled at fandom-made-famous stories. Twilight, CC, WhatshershadesofGrey. And the guise is that "the books are bad!" which, no shit they are. But let's stick with that argument instead of complaining they're essentially transformative bc hello, kettle? Pot calling for you. /soapbox

YEP. Houses. Made of glass.

(If anything I'm a little peeved that someone writing BETTER BDSM fic didn't get picked up instead of 50 shades, but it is what it is.)

Oh, Christ, totally! There are writers I could pick out of a HAT who are 10x better. And writers I know personally who are least 100x better. Which sucks hard, but yeah. It's about connections.

And timing, and having the ovaries to go over the serial number with an acetylene torch. (Also hot damn, I'm GLAD that there's less of the the-only-thing-keeping-fandom-from-not-being-banned-is-no-one-is-making-money now than when I started fandoming in '99. So glad. Because it means more people from fandom ARE getting the recognition they deserve.)

(I'd actually love to see, say, a Hugo campaign to get a work of fanfiction on the ballot for best related work. And that's not something you could say out loud ten years ago.)

Yeah, definitely timing. Right now there's a scraped off serial number One Direction book coming out. I think it's even GAY. Hoorah. I bet the writing sucks, but hey. Go team 1D.

And the OTW has had a lot to do with the sea change. Much as I have UBER mixed feelings about the organizations uh, organization, the culture shift its engendered is worth celebrating.

I think the OTW could do with a structural audit--sitting down, looking at how it's organized, and figuring out whether it is the way it is because it needs to be that way, or because it just happened that way and is now the way it's always been.

But yeah, I'm massively grateful that it's caused the cultural shift it has. (With help from different sides of the Marion Zimmer Bradley ~stolen story~ coming to the fore. I think that without that fiasco, we'd have hit the place where we are in the late 90s or early oughts.)

I don't see why not. Like you said, there's basically no idea out there that's truly original, so why not get inspired from something else. I do it all the time. Unless you're stealing, plagiarizing, something, than it doesn't seem like it should be a big deal.
